On Sunday October 25, 2009 at 0032hrs. Hawthorne was dispatched for a reported structure fire / possible car into the structure Location of alarm across from 84 Taylor Ave. Citgo Gas Station. Units operating 2191, L56, TL12, U41, 63B1, Thornwood FD., Valhalla FD, Westch.Co. C7O Team, Westch. Co Dispat. (60 Control), MPPD, Con Ed Emergency Supervisor, Con Ed Gas

Upon arrival of 2191 he found a working fire located at the Citgo Gas Station which was the Attendants Booth. Crews from L56 quickly stretched handlines and were able to extinguish the fire quickly. During the overhaul stages crews also noticed a strong smell of natural gas in the area. Con Ed Gas was notified and responded. Crews from Hawthorne and Thornwood then started to evacuate the surrounding house for safety purposes. Once Con Ed was on scene they located a gas leak at the corner of the gas station property. Crews from Hawthorne and Thornwood then did a secondary search of all the houses that were evacuated and escorted Con Ed gas crews into the houses and checked for any type of gas leaking into the structures. All searches came up negative. Con Ed then started to excavate the area around the area were the smell was coming from. Con Ed discovered that the was break in the gas line and made emergency repair to the area.

C&O determined that the natural gas had leaked back into the attendants booth and was ignited by a heater that was left on in the booth. No one was in the booth at the time of the incident.

Homeowners were able to go back into there homes around 5am and all Hawthorne, Thornwood, and Valhalla units returned shortly after that Con Ed stayed on scene for several hours after that.
